Barbara:
Yesterday CP did better being back "home". Although he refused to get dressed or get out of bed. They told him they would allow him the luxury today but that tomorrow he would have to get out of bed and sit in a chair and do PT.
This evening Reid went up to see him and he was dressed, in a wheel chair and eating at his table in the dining hall. He did eat about 8 bites tonight so things are improving. We went back to his room and called Susannah. After the phone call Pop was exhausted and asked to go to bed. The staff came in and helped get him back in bed, he fell right to sleep.
They said it had been a long day for him. He did have PT today and had been up in the wheel chair almost all day. Hopefully each day will get better.

Reid again:
We were at the hospital at 6:30 this morning to meet with the doctor. Pop will be transferred by ambulance sometime today. Barb and I went to work and will meet Pop at the VA when he is moved.
Got to the VA at 5:30 Pop had only been there for about an hour. He is already more alert than he was in the hospital. He said he was glad to 'be back home' and we tried to get him to eat. No such luck. He hasn't eaten since Saturday lunch. The nurses said that they would try again in an hour and maybe after he is settled in his room he will feel like eating.

Reid again:
Went to see Pop today, he hasn't eaten since lunch yesterday and so asked them to give him Ensure. He sucked it down! Found out that his grandsons called him from NC for his birthday and Susannah has been trying to call but Pop slept through the phone ringing.
Pop is still sleeping a lot and we were told that he will be released to return to the VA nursing home in Cameron tomorrow. The doctor thinks that getting back in familiar surroundings might cause him to start eating and doing better. Patients with Alzheimer's typically do better in familiar surroundings so we hope this will be the case.

Reid:
Today we went to see Pop and took him Wendy's chicken nuggets, french fries and a frosty. He only ate 1 nugget, 3 fries and 2 bites of the frosty. He has no appetite. Barbara's mom and dad came to visit and brought him a gift, the hospital decorated a "birthday cupcake". Spent several hours together and he is worn out. We left about 4:00 pm.
He is in a lot of pain today, hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Been a very busy week. We've been going to the hospital at 6:30 staying until 7:30, going to work all day and then back to the hospital at 5:00-7:30. CP is in a lot of pain and is refusing pain meds. He is also not eating more than 2 bites each meal.
PT got him out of bed on Thursday and it was pretty rough. He is going to have a long road to recovery. CT scan reveals a torn rotator cuff on the right side, that is why he has difficutly with his arm. Sorry for him...he tore the left rotator cuff last spring so this will further complicate recovery.
Tomorrow is his birthday, 86 years old!!! It is also Reid's birthday, 56 years old!

It has been so long since I've updated the blog, things have been so busy! Work, caring for family and just....life.
Reid and I still go up 1-2 times each week to see CP and last night we were so surprised at his physical changes. He is using his left arm to assist his right arm to eat and drink. He appears to have conjunctivitis and can't stay awake through dinner. After an hour we decided that we would go ahead and go home.
When CP got up from the dinner table to go back to his room he was very unsteady on his feet and seemed more confused than usual. Reid stopped at the nurses station on the way out and told them about the changes that we noticed and asked them to have the doctor order tests to see if his brain shunt is failing. We expressed our concern that he could be a fall risk and were told that PT would evaluate him. Today they called and said it will be Monday or Tuesday before PT can see him. So, we called the family doctor and made an appointment for Monday to see how he can expedite the process.

Barbara again:
Received a phone call at 7:30 last night, CP had fallen and broken his hip and had been taken by ambulance to the hospital. Reid and I jumped in the car and headed to the hospital. We called the family doctor and decided to have the current hospital stablize him and transport him by ambulance from Cameron, MO to Kansas City, MO since the hip is broken and will require surger to repair it. At 10:30 the ambulance arrived and the transport to KC began. Poor CP was in a lot of pain but he was a good sport about it. They ER doctor gave him heavy duty pain killers since the ambulance ride will take an hour.
We arrived at the hospital in KC at 11:45 and got CP into their ER and they had to start all of the assessments all over again. ER doctor shows us his hip x-ray...can you say ouch? The femur is broken below the ball jointn and broken length wise and peeled back like a banana. He will require a rod in that leg. If the ball joint had been broken he would have needed total hip replacement.
Reid and I left the hospital at 2:30 am and went home and slept until 5:30 am. The doctor said that we needed to be at the hospital at 6:30 am to discuss the options. We met with the surgeon and they tell us surgery will be at 5:30 pm. Reid stayed with CP and I went to work. At 2:30 Reid called me and said surgery had been moved up to 3:00 so went on over to sit with him during surgery. Surgery was moved back...don't know why...so it took place at 4:00. It lasted 90 minutes but all went well. We waited until CP was out of recovery and in his room before we called it a day at 7:30. My sister and brother-in-law stopped in to see CP and lend support.
I think Reid and I drove home half asleep.
